These once-in-a-lifetime classic
Gerstner chests were built during the year 2006, our 100th
year of business. Each chest is serial numbered and each owner’s name
will be listed for posterity on a special Owners Registry honorary
plaque
perpetually on display in the lobby of H. Gerstner & Sons home office. Each
owner’s family and his direct heirs will be given a VIP factory tour
during any future visit to the Gerstner company in Dayton, Ohio.

Quarter-sawn white oak
Golden Oak – Model Number GO-LE-616
White oak
hardwoods are quarter-sawn to feature as much “flake” as possible. This quarter
sawing of oak is accomplished to yield the most stable piece of wood possible.
Quarter-sawn white oak is the wood of choice in barrel making which goes back to
the very roots of the founding of H. Gerstner & Sons. Beginning in 1906,
quarter-sawn white oak was used in building the drawer fronts of the very first
Gerstner leatherette covered toolmaker’s chests.
Natural
Walnut – Model Number W-LE-616
The black
walnut hardwoods we use are also quarter-sawn. Because plain-sawn walnut has
such a large figure or “cathedral” pattern to its grain, quarter sawing the
lumber reveals a nice straight grain with somewhat of a striped appearance that
lends itself nicely to the relative size of Gerstner chests and cases. Black
walnut was first used at Gerstner during WWII when white oak became a wood of
choice for many items built in support of the war effort.
Black walnut
Black cherry
American
Cherry – Model Number C-LE-616
The black
cherry hardwoods we use are plain-sawn to reveal a compact, beautifully
patterned grain. Gerstner craftsmen, in honor of the company’s Seventy-Fifth
Anniversary, first built cherry chests featuring brass hardware in 1982. Cherry
has become the second most popular hardwood at Gerstner (white oak, because of
tradition, still holds the number one position), and the introduction of brass
hardware for cherry has become a popular upgrade for both white oak and walnut.
The finish on all of the Gerstner Legacy chests is a hand-polished semi-gloss
lacquer and the selected hardware for all three limited edition chests is
polished brass.
