DESCRIPTION

Birdseye Maple is cream to light reddish-brown heartwood. Although maple’s grain is usually straight and smooth the birdseye figuring can be combined with blister, quilt, fiddleback or burl grain, scattered over the entire tree or in irregular stripes and patches. Rotary cutting highlights these characteristics.

Color Range: N. American Maple comes in an extreme range of color variability as the wood varies in color from the pale cream colored sapwood on through to the different tan/brown tones to dark brown colors found in the heartwood.

Color Change: N. American Maple undergoes a medium degree of color change, with slight ambering from a cream/white to a more golden cream color over time.

APPLICATIONS

Uses for this wood include furniture, paneling and musical instruments. High grade cabinetry and conference tables also utilize this unique wood using a veneer. Hard Maple’s popularity has soared in recent years, both in kitchen cabinetry and fine furniture-making. Hard Maple has been traditionally used for implement and machinery parts, turnery, wooden dishes, and a variety of planing mill products. It is the standard wood for cutting boards, as it imparts no taste to food and holds up well. Hard Maple is also a popular wood for flooring in residences because of its superior wearing quality and excellent technical properties. Well made Hard Maple furniture should outlast the owner, while serving both the aesthetic and practical senses.
