Gerstner Woods and Color Options:
The pictures on our website are a good overall
representation of the colors of the products that we sell. The photography does
utilize some lighting techniques that can make them appear slightly lighter in
tone. Due to the nature of wood and the variety of grain patterns in even a
single piece of wood, all products will have slight variations from the color
shown. The exposure of wood to light will change their original color,
due to this fact, we cannot guarantee color matches on units
purchased separately. If you have a product you would like matched we would need
a drawer or some other piece from your chest to aid us in matching your new
chest to the older one. See below for explanations of our various woods and
colors available. Custom colors and some color matching is also available,
contact us for more information.
Golden Oak
Golden Oak products have a medium to dark golden stain color. This color is similar to the natural aging process that occurs in chests that we see over 40 years old. This golden color gives them an antique look that brings out the richness of the grain patterns. We only use quartersawn white oak, which is renowned for its stability and unique "tiger striping" grain. Not every piece of oak is highly figured with this "striping", however we can custom match a chest for you, please contact us for a price quote. Your new oak chest will darken over time.
Natural Walnut
Natural Walnut products have no stain. We use a lacquer finish that has a slight amber tint when finishing walnut. Most walnut furniture found today has been stained to give the wood a uniform look, and therefore appears much darker than our walnut. The lack of a stain on our walnut products allow the rich variations in the natural wood grain to show. Walnut can vary from a very blond color, which is found closer to the heart or center of the tree, to a very dark or almost blackish tone. We only use quartersawn black walnut, which is very stable and this cut produces a beautiful straight, mostly uniform grain pattern. Each piece of wood can vary greatly in color, the larger the piece used the greater the chance of color variation. Your new walnut chest will lighten over time.
Please note: Walnut has been discontinued as a standard stock option. There may be limited availability for some products still in stock as of August 2007 - please call for details. Exotic wood pricing will apply to walnut products once stock runs out of each style.
American Cherry
American Cherry products have a light to medium fruitwood stain. Ours is a very unique color and does not match what people usually perceive to be a "cherry" furniture color. Our cherry products typically come standard with brass hardware and brown felt. This upgrade lends itself very well to home usage. We only use cherry that is plain sawn, which is stable and produces a wonderful flowing, curvy grain pattern. Cherry has small imperfections known as "pitting" that occurs naturally. At Gerstner these imperfections are kept to a minimum, but they sometimes can appear as very small knots, or a series of darker swirls and spots. Our American Cherry stain is light enough to highlight and accentuate the unique grain pattern. Smaller pieces of cherry will not show the flowing pattern as well as larger pieces. Your new cherry chest will darken over time.
Burgundy Cherry
Burgundy Cherry products have a very dark rosewood stain. This stain is very reddish in color, and the wood grain absorbs it quickly. Color will vary with the grain pattern slightly, but the Burgundy Cherry has an overall even look to it. The grain pattern is slightly obscured due the dark color, yet some pieces highlight the darker tones found naturally in cherry wood. Maple
Over the years Gerstner has introduced new hardwood options as trends change. We are entering a new phase where Walnut has been discontinued (largely due to supply and cost) and we now have a new requests for a lighter wood to match today’s contemporary home decor designs, with cream colored woods. White Hard Maple is a beautiful clear hardwood. Its color is known as the "white" wood of choice, and the highest grades of North American Maple have a uniform bright white color without contrasting heartwood or streaks. North American Maple undergoes a medium degree of color change, with slight ambering from a cream/white to a more golden cream color over time. Black felt interior sets off the subtle graining in this new cream colored hardwood. Your new Maple chest will darken over time.
